Ministry of Healthcare approves sales of drugs in retail stores

22.01.2013

The Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation has approved sales of over the counter drugs (OTC) through supermarkets and retail stores. According to Veronika Skvortsova, the Minister of Healthcare, «the Ministry of Healthcare together with the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) and the Ministry of Economic Development are working on the list of such OTC drugs».

Veronika Skvortsova added that «it is necessary to consider all risks of such sales». The list OTC drugs that can be sold in retail networks should contain only safe and high quality products, causing no adverse effects for humans.

The proposals of non-pharmacy OTC drug sales in Russia appeared in the end of last year. The authors of the idea believe that this will increase competition in pharmaceutical market and consequently reduce prices. Some officials of the Ministry of Healthcare, representatives of the pharmaceutical business and the Federal Antimonopoly Service came against this initiative.
